As exemplified by an automobile engine oil filter, the usual pleated filter paper is internally supported by an interpleated layer of high tear and tensile strength material which is substantially more flexible than the paper. With the ends of both layers anchored conventionally in the element's end caps rigidly held apart by the usual perforated center tube, the flexible material is subjected to a tensile stress when the paper attempts to move inwardly, the paper being thereby supported against rupturing or pleat tear. The flexible material thus functioning as a back-up layer for the paper, can be pretensioned to provide greater additional resistance to inward movement of the paper.

gi The filter layer and the substrate are not bonded to each other, but are mounted so that they can move relative to each other.
The ends of the filter layer and the substrate is fixed, for example, by pouring cement on the covers 9, mounted on a perforated pipe 5.
The filter with its base 2 is fastened by screwing it onto the socket of an automobile engine (not shown in the drawing).
The oil to be cleaned through the holes 4 enters the cavity 10 between the housing and the filter element, passes through the filter layer 7 and the substrate 8, where it is cleaned from mechanical impurities, enters the perforated pipe 5 and through the hole 3 is removed from the filter.
The filter works as follows.
Due to the pressure difference between the oil in the cavity and the perforated pipe, a force acting radially in the direction of the perforated pipe acts on the filter element. Under the action of this force, the outer paper layer tends to bend over the entire circumference. The inner layer is thus stretched and becomes tightly stretched and resistant to the deformation of the filter layer. The substrate porosity is somewhat higher than the porosity of the filter layer, which, because of this, has a slight hydraulic resistance. As
the substrate is a non-woven nylon material under the trade name Cerex. The combination of the proposed filter layer and the Cerex substrate allows an increase in the magnitude of the tensile Moulin pressure on the filter element. The proposed filter has a significantly longer service life and provides a car mileage of 24,000 km or more.
